Fernhill Linux Project - Legal

Linux is freely available to everybody in the world and is licenced under the GPL.

The GPL, or General Public Licence is very different to proprietary licences, such as those Microsoft sell you allowing you to use their software on only one machine, with no right to modify, copy or redistribute that software.

Linus Torvalds created the Linux kernal in 1991 and is quoted as saying “Releasing the Linux kernel under the GPL is one of the best decisions he ever made”.

Software released under the GPL simply put, gives you the right to use, modify and redistribute that software provided you give that right to others. This is a scary idea for some, but in reality GPL software is owned by you, me and everybody. We can modify it, make it better and redistribute it or just be happy to use it for free.

GPL software is provided as is, there is no warranty implied or otherwise. Loss or damage from using it in anyway is entirely at your own risk.

Fernhill Linux Project, website, services, support, software and hardware are provided on a similar basis to the GPL.
There is not cost to you and there is no warranty implied or otherwise. Loss or damage from using our website, services, support, software or hardware in anyway is entirely at your own risk. You are free to modify and redistribute any software provided that you comply with its original license (GPL in most cases). You are also free to pass on donated computers (in most cases) provided that you do not receive payment for doing so.
All information, advice and instructions are provided based on our knowledge and understanding. Like everyone else in the world we sometimes make mistakes and you should double check with other sources if you are not sure.
